Norman, OK: End Your Day At Days Inn In Norman, The Ramble On

Days Inn Norman
2543 West Main Street
Norman, OK 73069
Phone number: (800) 329-1073
Website: wyndhamhotels.com/days-inn
Prices: $$$$

On the outskirts of Norman and close to I-35, this Days Inn was a massive step-up from the Days Inn I remember. As Harry Carey would have said ... "Holy Cow!"

I was extremely impressed for $60+ per night. The lobby was upscale, nice and clean, and the staff behind the counter were helpful and polite.

The room was spacious with AC, two queen beds, desk and chair, chair and ottoman, big screen LCD TV with cable and a bathroom with granite countertops and a jacuzzi bath. The wi-fi was fast and reliable, so we could not have asked for more in this price range.

The hot breakfast was good, not great, with waffles, powdered eggs and sausage patties, toast, cereal, and the like as well as decent coffee. The place was cheap, clean, convenient, and an excellent value.

With not a lot to do in Norman and in a nondescript recently developed area on the outskirts, this is a quick inexpensive stop on your way somewhere else, in our case Texas.

Portland, OR: (Airbnb) Heather's Cozy NE Portland Apartment

Heather's Cozy NE Portland Apartment (Airbnb)

NE 79th Avenue
Portland, Oregon
Montavilla, Glisan and I-205
Website
Prices:$$$$

Let me start by saying that I have a very popular travel blog and have received numerous accolades on several of the top travel and restaurant websites/apps. Unlike many reviewers who are either afraid to tell the truth or have a personal relationship with the business, I reserve 5-stars (10 Bombs on my blog) for only the most flawless restaurants, accommodations, businesses, attractions and destinations, those where you absolutely and without a doubt get the most “bang-for-the-buck”. I try to remain as objective in all of my reviews as possible, providing the pros and cons as I see them and providing a rating based on the overall “value” as compared to similar entities in similar locations. Otherwise, if I hate a place, they get 1-2 Bombs (1-star); if so-so with numerous”issues", they get 3-4 Bombs (2-stars); if average (the vast majority of businesses fall into this category if you look at the distribution of my ratings), they get 5-6 Bombs (3-stars); if above average, they get 7-8 Bombs (4-stars); and if they are one of the very rare “best of the best” values in my experience, they get 9-10 Bombs (5-stars – I always round up from bombs to stars because I use a 10 point Likert-type scale in order to be more discernible). Now, on to my review …
The size of the apartment, privacy, photos and amenities were all spot-on and the apartment was extremely clean, organized and well stocked. Heather even left us a very thoughtful welcome note, a bottle of Oregon wine, and a few local cans of beer in the fridge upon arrival.
The Airbnb description notes, in two places, that the area has "quiet time after 10pm” and that the “hosts live upstairs”, but well after 10pm on our first two nights there was quite a bit of sound emanating from people walking and talking in the rooms upstairs. Heather left on an extended holiday trip a couple days after arrival, so things were extremely quiet and peaceful thereafter.
Otherwise, we were not mislead in the least and the apartment was for the most part “as advertised” except as noted above and in the “Location” section below. The apartment was quite large and modern with one big room where there is a sitting/TV area and kitchenette (small fridge, microwave, toaster, kettle, and utensils) with a large table, a decent size bedroom with a comfy queen size bed, and a huge bathroom with shower and all of the amenities you might need while using the “loo”.
There was little communication after making our reservation on 9/3/2016 and 11/17/2016, four days before our scheduled stay from 11/21/2017 to 11/27/2-16. I finally sent an Airbnb message to Heather four days before check-in, asking about arrival details and telling her what time we would arrive. Heather quickly replied with a detailed message outlining most of the things we needed to know when we got there.

We had no idea how to enter the apartment as listed in the description or messaging, not knowing if we were in the right place because the side door had no exterior light and we had no idea that you actually had to touch the lock before the key pad would light-up. However, I called Heather and she quickly came outside to show us how to get in and give us a quick orientation.

Observation: An exterior light near the entry door and a reference regarding how to operate the electronic keypad, informing guests that you need to touch it to activate the backlight would have been very helpful. We had to use the LED lights on our cell phones while hauling four bags in the drizzle to see where we were going and, even then, we were still unsure if it was the correct door.

I also tried to call Heather the first night to find out how to access the TV channels, but she failed to answer even though I could hear (quite well I might add as noted in "Accuracy") her and her companion moving around upstairs until quite late. She called me back the next morning, apologizing and giving me the required information as well as telling me which phone number would be best used to contact her in the future.
Observations: 1) Clearer instructions or an orientation describing how to use the Apple TV (we had never used Apple TV before) and exactly which channels (there are over 30 options available) are accessible by guests would be helpful; 2) Even though it was noted that "Cable TV” was excluded (looking again at the description after we returned), it would be nice if cable was included in order for guests to be able to access local channels (news, sporting events, etc) during their stay; and 3) Information regarding which phone number to use (work or cell and which was which) for contact purposes would have been very helpful in advance, particularly because of our difficulty finding out how to enter the apartment.
Heather left for the duration of our stay a couple days after we arrived and she gave us clear instructions about how to contact her boyfriend (who was staying in the area) in the event of an emergency. That was fine with us because the noise from upstairs (people walking around and talking) was quite distracting. She did check in with us by phone a few days before departure to make sure things were going well, but we had no interaction with her during our stay other than by phone/text and the five minutes she physically spent with us upon arrival. There was no place to wash the limited number of plates, cups, silverware and glasses other than the bathroom sink and we ran out of coffee shortly after she left, but they were minor inconveniences as there was a Fred Meyer (Kroger’s Oregon version of Walmart) less than a mile west on Glisan.

Observation: We stumbled upon the Fred Meyer by chance while driving back from dinner, so it would be nice if Heather listed such details (nearby markets, pharmacies, hospitals, etc.) in the listing description or, otherwise comprehensive, orientation booklet.
The apartment was extremely clean and comfortable upon arrival with almost all of the amenities you might need during a short stay.

However, we had no idea how to enter the apartment as listed in the description or messaging, not knowing if we were in the right place because the side door had no exterior light and we had no idea that you actually had to touch the lock before the key pad would light-up. When I called Heather, she quickly came outside to show us how to get in and give us a quick orientation.

The apartment is centrally located as advertised and it is extremely easy to reach most areas of Portland, which is made-up of a “downtown” and several unique and charming neighborhoods, within a 10-30 minutes car ride depending on traffic.
The neighborhood sounds wonderful in the description, but is not what I would consider an “upscale” area and the restaurants and bars within walking distance (over 1/4 of a mile) looked a bit seedy. The closest main streets (NE 81st and NE Glisan) did not look like appealing or extremely safe places to walk at night, so we ate at the many wonderful restaurants around Portland.

For the price, I would say that the locations is very central if you have a vehicle, but expect a fair amount of walking and a somewhat complex transit system if without transportation.

At $90.17 per night, including taxes and fees (we did not receive the 15% discount because our stay was one night short of the 7 day requirement), the apartment is a very good value for the Portland area where things are a bit pricier than in the Midwest and many other places we have visited (41 countries so far). A quick search located several well known chain hotels/motels in the area ranging from $56 to $87 per night, so considering the size, cleanliness, and amenities included in the apartment, we were very pleased with the accommodations although a price in the $80 range would seem more appropriate.

Lincoln, NE: At This Cheap Hotel, You Get What You Pay For

Horizon Inn

2901 NW 12th Street
Lincoln, NE 68521
Airport Area
Phone number: (402) 474-5252
Website: horizoninnmotel.com
Prices: $$$$

Decent, and I use that term loosely, inexpensive hotel on the outskirts of Lincoln near the airport, so you have to drive if you want to see any of the nice parts of Lincoln. There is a sex toy shop next door and the train tracks run less than 50 feet from the guest rooms, so that should tell you something. Do not plan on getting a restful night's sleep unless you are a very heavy sleeper.
The rooms are clean and the beds comfortable, but the wallpaper in our room was in serious disrepair and the windows (with a view of the train tracks and National Guard depot) were filthy.

The "hot breakfast" consisted of a waffle machine. Otherwise, all you can get are bagels and bread (there is a toaster), peanut butter and jelly, Fruit Loops and Corn Flakes, watered down juice, and weak coffee. When I returned for a second cup at 9:05 (breakfast is served until 9am), there were still people eating breakfast, but the manager was pouring a thermal pot of coffee down the sink. When I asked if there was any more coffee, all he said was "Breakfast was over 5 minutes ago and if you're really Jonesing for coffee, walk next door to the QuikMart". Wrong answer Bubba!

Philadelphia, PA: Nice, Clean Airbnb Room With Shared Bath in Central Philly ... Excellent Value!

Airbnb

Leane's "A Fabulous Night's Stay"
Website: Airbnb.com - A Fabulous Night's Stay

The room and home were very clean and the price reasonable for such a central location near downtown Philadelphia.

Pros:
1) Easy walk to the bus or Metro and central enough that you can walk to many places around downtown.
2) There are markets, pharmacies, shops, and restaurants within a 10-minute walk of the house.
3) The room is reasonably large and private, having nearly everything needed for a short stay, including a large closet, fold-down desk, and folding chair.
4) The shared bathroom is very big and has plenty of supplies (hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, extra toothbrushes, etc.)
5) The neighborhood is clean, well kept, safe, and the people in the area were friendly. We felt safe and welcome in the neighborhood and were not concerned about our safety, even after dark.
6) There is a washer and dryer in the home.
7) The wi-fi is fast, free, reliable and we never had a problem connecting, loading pages, or watching video/movies.
8) The host stays to herself mostly, does not "hover", and was helpful when we asked questions about the area.
9) Coffee, tea, instant hot chocolate and cookies are provided in the dining room downstairs for breakfast.
10) No TV in the home, so you can spend more time seeing Philadelphia!

Cons:
1) Parking on the street near the house was scarce when we arrived, but I managed to find a spot down the block after dropping our bags.
2) The bedrooms are upstairs and the staircase is narrow, making it tricky to maneuver large bags to the room.
3) The bathroom is shared among three rooms and access was occasionally a problem.
4) There is no ice or bottled/filtered water available, so bring/buy your own if you like ice and do not want to drink tap water.
5) The coffee was nearly gone and the host unavailable when we awoke on our first morning, so I had to figure out where the coffee and filters were stored to prepare more.
6) The host did not respond to the text and email I sent the day before arrival nor did she answer two phone calls I placed when we first arrived and had difficulty locating a parking place. However, she did answer the door once I found a temporary parking spot to drop our bags and was very responsive thereafter.
7) No TV in the home if you want to catch up on news or your favorite show(s).

In summary, Leane is a very personable host, the room an exceptional value, and the home in immaculate condition. A comparable hotel room would cost well over $100, making this Airbnb option an excellent value if visiting central Philadelphia.

Leane's Response:

"Thank you so much for the review. It was lovely to have met you both and I am pleased you would stay again when in Philly. Sorry I missed your call, I have a 100% response rate and take communication very seriously. On occasion I will miss a message because I am physically unable in the moment, but fortunately we spoke within 10 minutes of your call. My response time is within a few minutes if I happen to miss you, which most of my guests will tell you rarely happens. It is so funny you mentioned about bottled water. Before seeing your review I actually went out and stocked the fridge with sparkling water, an assortment of flavored, natural lemonades, orange juice and of course... bottled water. There is also ice, chocolate fudge and vanilla ice cream and fruit bars available in the freezer for guests. You should have stayed one more day! Now folks can make iced coffee and oreo cookie sundaes to beat this Philly heat! Lol! Thanks again for all the feedback and happy travels!"

The room was a dump (cigarette burns on the bedspread and around the sink, broken and mismatched furniture) and breakfast was pitiful (coffee and packaged sweet rolls). I've stayed in nicer hotels in India while paying less than $5 per night. How they got a 7.5 rating on Booking.com and $85 of my money is beyond me.

The only reason I did not give them a single bomb was because the bed was reasonably comfortable and the sheets appeared to be the only clean thing in the room.

Silverthorne, Colorado: Luxury? Inn and Suites

Luxury Inn & Suites
540 Silverthorne Ln
Silverthorne, CO 80498
Phone: (970) 468-0800
Website: luxuryinnsuites.com
Prices: $$$$  Hotels

The cheapest, I didn't say "cheap", lodging in Keystone Resort (Colorado) area is the Luxury Inn and Suites. Located in Silverthorne, Colorado just north of I-70 and one block east of the main drag, the hotel/motel is conveniently located near shops, restaurants, markets, and more.

I paid $69 weekday and $90 weekend on Hotwire, but when I got to the hotel they were advertising $54.95 weekday rates. My payment to Hotwire came to $320 plus tax for four nights, which seems a bit high for a 1 STAR property, but the rooms are clean with a small fridge and microwave, AC, TV with HBO, small indoor pool with Jacuzzi, and continental breakfast included. Even though I paid an average of $80 per night, a value in this overpriced tourist area, I do not appreciate paying $15 more than the advertised rate people simply walking in off the street pay. Hotwire.com should be ashamed of themselves!

Breakfast is "OK", with hot coffee, bagels, English muffins, and donuts still in the plastic box from the supermarket ... classy!  The staff are not very friendly, but helpful when pressed into action.  They seem to care less that you exist, much less being a breathing human being and "valued" customer? Checkout is at 10:00 AM, so do not plan on sleeping in.  I was lucky enough to talk the manager (owner?) into an 11:30 AM checkout on my last day, but it took some persistence and smooth talking to get him to grudgingly agree.

The rooms are moderate in size and fairly clean, although the tile in the bathroom was cracked and some of the furniture looked as though it was purchased at the local Goodwill. Wireless internet is free, but slower than molasses in January...aargh, aargh. The "king" bed I was supposed to sleep in was a few testicles short of kingliness, looking more like a "queen" to me (no disrespect intended to my LGBT audience). It was fairly comfortable nonetheless.

The indoor pool was small, yet clean, with a decent size Jacuzzi that had whirlpool jets with a prostate problem...not a very forceful stream if you know what I mean.

Exterior doors are open all night with no supervision, so if you are looking for security, keep on looking!

CombatCritic gives the unluxurious Luxury Inn and Suites 4 OUT OF 10 BOMBS for travel value...and they only did that well because everything else is a rip-off in the holiday destination of Keystone (Silverthorne/Dillon/Frisco), Colorado.
